A 55-year-old male teacher underwent a facelift without informing his family. He spent two days in hospital; peak facial swelling occurred on postoperative Days 3 and 4, with a 12-day initial recovery period. At his follow-up check-up, when he looked in the mirror for the first time, he thought: the procedure was absolutely worthwhile.
Endowed with advanced education and a professional background, this former high school teacher retained remarkable charm at age 55. The natural age-related creases on his face were far from unsightly; instead, they lent him an elegant, composed scholarly bearing shaped by years of learning.
However, progressive ptosis of the malar fat pad, deepening nasolabial folds and soft tissue ptosis with blurring of the jawline had gradually dulled his vitality and mental outlook. Trusting advances in modern aesthetic plastic surgery, he did extensive research before travelling to Beijing for a facelift consultation with me.
I once asked about his primary motivation for surgery. He explained he did not seek a drastic, transformative overhaul of his facial appearance, only moderate tightening of his native skin and sharper definition of facial contour. In this era of self-care and self-fulfilment, people of all genders and ages are entitled to pursue an improved, more fulfilling quality of life.
The over-five-hour facelift was completed uneventfully, followed by a two-night hospital stay. Peak oedema set in on postoperative Days 3 and 4; most patients start to feel noticeable facial relief by Day 5. The patient strictly complied with postoperative instructions and consistently wore a compression facial mask throughout early recovery. It was not until his 12-day follow-up appointment that he viewed his postoperative facial changes in a mirror for the first time.
Visible improvements to date include overall lifted and tightened facial tissue, softened rhytides and restored defined jawline. Complete resolution of residual oedema will take an additional one to two weeks, meaning the final optimal aesthetic outcome is yet to emerge; mild transient irregularity in facial appearance is normal at this stage. We look forward to witnessing his full progressive recovery and final results.
